Best of Illustrator plug-ins

Andrew's Vector Plug-ins Collection

The collection comes with 22 different sets of plug-ins and some of them may be a bit “fluffy,” but they’re all interesting. If you like to experiment with designs and effects in Illustrator, you should check out these plug-ins. Some of them could be used for things that Illustrator should have already, such as PerspectiveGrid and Layers.
The various plug-ins come with a folder full of bonus material, which can be a good starting point to learning what they’re capable of. Also, each plug-in comes with HTML-based documentation, which is fine for one or two plug-ins, but I would have preferred a printable PDF covering all functions. Sometimes it’s nice to print out a manual and refer to it while playing around onscreen.

MultiPage 4

MultiPage is about as simple a plug-in as you’ll find. But, as is often the case, this simplicity makes it very effective and very usable. MultiPage cleverly uses layers, in combination with its own palette, to set up the effect of having multi-page documents in Illustrator. You can even use master pages. The plug-in is handy for the occasional longer print job and very inexpensive. But if longer print jobs come your way more often, you might as well get your hands on InDesign.

SymmetryWorks 5

Best Animation Books

The Animator's Survival Kit:
A Manual of Methods, Principles, and Formulas for Classical, Computer, Games, Stop Motion, and Internet Animators
by Richard Williams

Properly the best and most advanced book on animation technique. Williams provides the underlying principles of animation that every animator -- from beginner to expert, classic animator to computer animation whiz -- needs. Urging his readers to "invent but be believable," he illustrates his points with hundreds of drawings, distilling the secrets of the masters into a working system.

Cartoon Animation
by Preston Blair

The best book to get a clear overview of the principles. Famed animator Preston Blair shares his expertise on how to develop a cartoon character, create dynamic movement, and coordinate dialogue with action.

The Illusion of Life
by Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston

The definitive account of the development of Disney animation explains what made Disney's style unique. It covers topics as diverse as animation technique, the 12 principles, storytelling, sound effects, drawing hair, acting, pacing, comedy, and design. A lot of animators have over the years referred to this as the bible of animation.

Animation from Script to Screen
by Shamus Culhane

Shamus Culhane one of the old classical animators. He created the walk cycle of the seven dwarfs in snow white. He explains the basics of animation. This book is a great way to understand the techniques of hand drawn animation; it also offers good exercises and points out other sources of great value. Even though the book is a little old-fashioned it still provides important information about animation.

Basic Bouncing Ball Tutorial

Principles of Traditional Animation

The following principles were developed and named:

  1. Squash and Stretch - defining the rigidity and mass of an object by distorting its shape during an action
  2. Timing and Motion - spacing actions to define the weight and size of objects and the personality of characters
  3. Anticipation - the preparation for an action
  4. Staging - presenting an idea so that it is unmistakably clear
  5. Follow Through and Overlapping Action - the termination of an action and establishing its relationship to the next action
  6. Straight Ahead Action and Pose-to-Pose Action - The two contrasting approaches to the creation of movement
  7. Slow In and Out - the spacing of the in-between frames to achieve subtlety of timing and movement
  8. Arcs - the visual path of action for natural movement
  9. Exaggeration - Accentuating the essence of an idea via the design and the action
  10. . Secondary Action - the action of an object resulting from another action
  11. . Appeal - creating a design or an action that the audience enjoys watching
